Spring is fast approaching; it will be here before we know it. We have had all winter to get everything fixed and upgraded to the newest parts to be ready for the year. So come on out and enjoy the park.
MUSHROOM season will be coming soon. Redbird State Recreation area allows mushroom hunting on the property for the daily gate fee or use your State Park pass to get in.
Currently the conditions at the park are very muddy and soft. Here is a picture of the main roadway into the park just before you get to powerline hill.

We have never seen this road that bad.
So remember to Tread Lightly when you are out enjoying the park. This is when most damage occurs on the trails from the freeze and thaw process.
Also a reminder to STAY ON THE TRAILS, do not make new ones or bypass obstacles. There have been some vehicles getting on trails that are not rated for them. All trails have a sign at the beginning of each trail to show what vehicles are allowed on that trail. This creates more work for the park staff to fix the trails when the wrong vehicles are using them.
April 6, 2013 is the first Night Ride of the year and is only 1 month away. We are also planning on a Trail Day that day with JPFrogg and the Redbird Foundation. We need to get out there and do some cleanup of the trails. We should have the local Scout troop coming out to help that day and pick up trash. Free lunch will be provided by the Redbird Foundation for all who volunteer that day. If you would like to volunteer that day and help out in any way, please contact Kenny @ redbirdstation@yahoo.com and let him know you are interested in helping that day. I need a list of names to turn in by no later than March 24, 2013.
We are also having a new T-Shirt design contest that is open to the public. 1st prize winner will receive a 10 Day Trail Pass for the best design that will be used for future shirts. Also, remember you can purchase a 10 Day Trail Pass for $75 at the Redbird SRA Gatehouse. End date for contest is April 30th.
There are plans to have a new RR crossing put in at the main entrance to allow everyone to cross over the tracks and not have to swing out into the county roadway. This will make it safer for everyone who attends the park. It should be completed sometime this summer. Shaun and the park staff are working hard all the time to make the park a better place. Let the park staff know about items of concern so it can be addressed or fixed (ie..Downed trees, trash or anything you think will make it a better place).
Redbird T-shirts and Stickers are still available at RedBird Station, so stop by to pick them up.
